Providing Creative Solutions
Inhibited propylene glycol, also known as PG, is commonly used as a heat transfer fluid in various applications, including HVAC systems, food and beverage processing, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and industrial processes. By maintaining proper heat transfer efficiency, it helps prevent overheating, equipment malfunctions, and system failures. Inhibited propylene glycol contains corrosion inhibitors that help protect the metal surfaces within a system from corrosion. Corrosion can lead to equipment damage, reduced efficiency, and system failures. The inhibitors in propylene glycol help extend the useful life of the fluid by reducing the degradation caused by oxidation and thermal breakdown. This ensures that the fluid can continue to perform its intended functions over an extended period.
Inhibited propylene glycol is used in applications such as:
Hydrite Hydri-Chill™ is a specialty-inhibited propylene glycol which contains a food grade inhibitor and can be applied where incidental contact with food or beverage products may occur. Hydri-Chill is acceptable for use as a heat transfer fluid with food processing equipment where there is possibility of food contact. Can be used in secondary cooling and heating, deicing, defrosting, dehumidifying, and winterizing pipes.
Hydrite Hydri-Chill inhibited propylene glycol is available in several variations for optimal performance.*

Outfitting a glycol system with Hydri-Chill provides superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional uninhibited propylene glycol solutions. Comparative laboratory testing completed to evaluate the effectiveness of Hydri-Chill at 50% (Figure 1) versus an un-inhibited 50% propylene glycol solution (Figure 2).
By using inhibited propylene glycol, system operators can enhance the overall reliability of their equipment and reduce the likelihood of unexpected failures or downtime. The corrosion protection and extended fluid life provided by inhibited propylene glycol contribute to the smooth operation of systems, leading to increased efficiency and longevity.
