Sodium Bisulfite

Bisulfite Benefits vs. Molten Sulfur

Facilities running their own molten sulfur burners encounter process, environmental, and safety challenges, which may lead them to consider bisulfites as a viable alternative. Benefits include:

  • Safer Handling: Due to its high temperature and careful temperature control requirements, molten sulfur is generally considered less safe to handle compared to bisulfites.
  • Reduced Emissions: When used for flue gas desulfurization (FGD), bisulfites (such as sodium bisulfite or calcium bisulfite) can be effective in reducing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. These compounds react with SO2 to form sulfite and sulfate compounds, which can be removed or converted into less harmful substances.
  • Reduced Energy Use: Maintaining molten sulfur is often an energy-intensive process, making bisulfites a more sustainable option.
  • Less Corrosive: Unlike molten sulfur bisulfites aren’t as corrosive, making them less damaging to certain equipment and infrastructure for handling and storage.

Sulfur Solutions in Industrial Water Treatment
